Uno dei clipper più famosi, la Thermopylae era tra le imbarcazioni più veloci del periodo, capace di raggiunge in Inghilterra dall’India in 18 giorni. Questo modello, lungo circa 48 cm, è realizzato con doppio fasciame in noce, tiglio, acero e palissandro..

One of the most famous clippers, the Thermopylae featured among the fastest ships of her time. She could reach England from India in just 18 days. This model of 48 cm in length was built with walnut double planking, maple, lime and rosewood.

Completamente attrezzata, questa nave montava fino a 36 vele quadre, randa, fiocchi e scopamare, e poteva raggiungere la velocità di 15 nodi. Il modello è stato restaurato nel 2002.

Completely equipped, this ship mounted up to 36 square sails, mainsail, jibs and studding sails and could sail at the speed of 18 knots. This model was restored in 2002.

La Thermopylae era una nave agile ed elegante e come in tutti i clipper lo scafo era composito, cioè costruito in ordinate d’acciaio rivestite di legno di teak e rame, sotto la linea del galleggiamento, per proteggere il fasciame dai parassiti dei mari tropicali.

The Thermopylae was an agile and elegant ship and like in all clippers her hull was composite, i.e. built by steel ribs covered with teak planks and copper under the waterline, which protected the hull from the parasites of the tropical seas.
